Michigan

Project Title: Project Success

The goal of Project Success is to ensure that MI Choice waiver participants who chose self direction have the information and support needed to be successful as employers and supervisors. The desired outcomes of this initiative include 1) reducing turnover rates of direct service workers serving MI Choice consumers who have chosen self-direction, 2) at least 10 training teams, consisting of one primary or secondary consumer and one staff person employed by the waiver agent or area agency on aging, created to use the revised modules of a "consumers as supervisors" curriculum, and 3) for each training team to conduct informational sessions on consumer direction and the tools and skills needed to successfully hire and retain direct service workers.

The National Direct Service Workforce Resource Center will be providing Michigan with intensive technical assistance with the following tasks:

  • Revising their "consumers as supervisors" curriculum for the MI Choice waiver program and long-term care population of elderly and people with disabilities, and to conduct "train the trainer" sessions with the select training teams of participants and MI Choice waiver staff.
  • Assistance with design and implementation of selection process for waiver agencies and their training teams
  • Support and coaching of the training teams in the first informational sessions they conduct
  • Assistance in addressing the complexities of supporting consumers who qualify for nursing home level services in becoming "trainers" or in attending informational sessions
  • Assistance in developing workforce related quality indicators in the MI Choice home and community based program
Populations Served: Aging, Physical Disabilities
